Exclusive Interview with Kandee Shoe Brand Founder Josh Wayman
Kandee Shoes is all abuzz on Twitter and Facebook among high heel shoe lovers and with styles like Bruiser, Caramel Kiss, Diamonds, Peek-a-Boo, Licorice, Bubble Gum, Lemonade, Parmafizz and the Licorice Petal Bootie, I must say I love your Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection. You’ve created an army of shoes in styles that will make people forfeit paying their rent or conveniently forget to pay their car note. Why do you think women find your styles so irresistible?
I am so glad you said that! I always try to design shoes which are different from those on the market and something which is fun yet wearable. I remember the first time I had the samples made and I spoke to a factory in Italy – they said the first designs were not commercial enough and too crazy, this pushed me even more to produce such shoes, as why would I want to produce a normal and boring shoe.
They are calling Josh Wayman the Mark Zuckerberg of shoes. How does that make you feel?
To be honest, I love that! Mark Zuckerberg is an intelligent and creative person which has led to a very successful business with Facebook. Therefore being compared with him is very exciting and if Kandee is as famous as Facebook that would be amazing.
Tell us a little bit about Josh Wayman, the Designer. What inspired you to start a shoe company and why did you settle on Kandee?
About Josh? 21 years old. Started Kandee at 19. No qualifications whatsoever. Never went to design school. Can’t really draw. To be honest with you, it happened really randomly. I was fed up of working for someone else and I wanted a big change. So I decided to get some samples of shoes I had designed that very day and it all is a haze from then really. After the success of the first collection, I continued designing and producing more collections which you see on Kandee’s website today. I left school with no qualifications, mainly because I hated school and I have never been great at being told what to do. I had no previous design experience expect for my brief spell of hairdressing (which I was terrible at may I add!)
You’ve got booties, flats and killer pumps in your arsenal. What’s next for Kandee Shoes?
Once we have taken over the shoe industry – we will look into handbags, accessories and it is my intention to make Kandee a lifestyle brand. We are also in talks to work with amazing candy brands in the US for collaborations, so I can not wait.
