Meet Dope Chick @DeviDev
She’s an LA girl by nature and a hip hop girl by heart. Fellow female DJ’s make room, radio host turned MTV personality Devi Dev is making a name for herself by repping hard for the west coast on the east coast and becoming New York’s newest sweetheart in the process.
Devon Anjelica, bka Devi Dev, has successfully turned her gift for gab into an enviable career. As an on-air personality, she’s had revealing sit-downs and provocative interviews with some of the biggest names in hip hop including Dr. Dre, Kanye West and Quincy Jones.
“When I was a kid I used to get written up constantly for talking in class,” she recalls.
Growing up in a single parent home, Dev was a latch key kid. In college, she majored in broadcast journalism with the aspiration of reporting the news.
“At first, I wanted to be a journalist and work in the trenches. But I always dreamed about being on the radio.”
She got her start in college radio at Cal State Northridge then worked the overnight shift at 93.5 KDAY before climbing the ranks. Early on in her career, she also worked random jobs at Victoria Secret, a car dealership, the LA Parks Department, and a jewelry store “slinging rolex’s” and at one point sold her car and rode the bus two hours to get to work.
The recently engaged 27 year-old has conquered several markets – having hosted succcessful radio shows in LA and Houston. Now she plays co-host to Sway on his morning show on Shade 45 and also recently landed a gig on MTV’s Hip Hop POV. She headlines the weekly show alongside the Charlamagne of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Amanda Seales, Somaya Krishnamurthy and Def Jam music exec Bu Thiam.
“We are all very opinionated,” she says. “I definitely hold it down for west coast hip hop. I am passionate and enthusiastic about it because I don’t think it gets the respect, understanding and attention it deserves.”
Of course life in the spotlight comes with a bit of controversy and not everyone can say they’ve had a Kardashian threatening them with a law suit. Last spring, Dev released a mixtape with Terrance Martin called the Sex EP which unbeknownst to Dev featured Kim Kardashian’s bare breasts on the cover.
“I don’t recognize people by their nipples,” she says jokingly recalling the cease and desist email she received from Kris Jenner and her lawyer. “The breasts did not have any arms, stomach or head attached. How was I supposed to know? If I saw a picture of mine, I wouldn’t be able to pick my own out of a line up – let alone someone else’s!”
TMZ, The View and other media outlets eventually learned of the story and reached out to Dev for interviews. Like any Dope Chic, Dev used the publicity to gain notoriety and released a follow-up mixtape with Martin entitled, Sex EP 2.0: Cease & Desist. (Take that, Kim!) High-five, Dev!
During the photo shoot, we got even more personal with this month’s certified Dope Chic:
You never leave home without? A camera. I am obsessed with capturing moments.
If you weren’t a radio personality you’d be? A social worker.
Pumps or tennis shoes? Flip flops. I am all about fancy sandals.
Favorite artist? Rihanna. She is herself and keeps it real. I love that.
Indie artists that no one should sleep on? Dom Kennedy, Freddie Gibbs, and producers Urban Noize.
Little known fact? I was extremely obsessed with Tupac as a child. I dedicated a part of my bedroom as a shrine to him complete with candles. I did a project on Tupac’s poetry that is still on display in a glass box in the library of my high school.
A woman’s greatest asset? Smart is sexy. A woman can do or get anything she wants to with the power of her mind and how she uses it.
Favorite clothing designer? Topshop is my guilty pleasure right now. And I love Alexander McQueen.
What do you think makes you admirable? My favorite thing about myself is my ability to step out on faith. It has changed my life and has never led me wrong. I never sacrifice my happiness. I have never settled for anything less than happiness. People will try to discourage but you have to stay true to what your vision is for yourself and whatever your ‘happy place’ is.
Congratulations on your engagement to Duane Brown. What’s one of the most romantic things that your fiancé has ever done for you? Thank you! The most romantic thing he has ever done would be planning our surprise engagement party. I was in LA for work and thought he was out of town, unbeknownst to me he was secretly plotting with my besties to pop the question. I walked into the Simon LA restaurant in the Sofitel for drinks with a friend and next thing I know I hear our song playing and see all my fam/friends smiling at me as he dropped to one knee and asked the big question.
Are you ever worried about NFL groupies trying to approach your man? The fact is, he’s an athlete so no matter how much I wish it wasn’t the case, groupies are gonna try to step to him at any given time either in person or via twitter. That being said, I absolutely trust him fully as my man and my best friend so no I’m not worried about it. We both believe in our future together.
Would you ever do a show like Basketball Wives or Football Wives? While I enjoy watching those shows, I don’t neccesarily think that would be a fit for me. He and I both have big careers that we’ve worked very hard for. To do a show like that I’d be giving up a huge part of myself to be known as “wife of such and such athlete” – that wouldn’t really fit in with the type of legacy I’m trying to create.
What’s one #PynkGirl Bedroom secret that you would like to share? My lips are sealed..
