A Detroit native known among her peers as “The Style Scholar”, Geneva’s early career was dedicated to the study of fashion history and culture — from Paul Poiret, Christian Diorʼs “New Look”, to the cultural explosion of Patrick Kelley. Geneva has worked and studied in London, Paris, Scotland, throughout South Africa and the Caribbean. With a booming yet still growing career, this 20-something has worked nearly all corners of the fashion and entertainment industries from journalism, advertising, to brand marketing working with the brands we wear, read and watch, among them include Topshop, Macyʼs, Conde Nast, “The Tyra Banks Show”, AOL, BBC, BET, The Huffington Post, Publicis. And the list goes on.

When sheʼs not covering designer collections at Fashion Weeks around the world, sheʼs interviewing superstars like Denzel Washington and Idris Elba. A player in the elite set of fashion and entertainment digital mavens, Geneva was the founding Style and Pop Culture Editor at Ebony Magazine, Digital, the former Content Manager at urban it girl web destination Clutch Magazine and an ongoing contributor to Vogue Italiaʼs Vogue.it.

Recently, Geneva joined the Uptown Magazine staff as the Brand Partnerships Manager. She’s also the Consulting Brand Manager for British cosmetics company, Vanessa Blake Cosmetics overseeing it’s North American launch. But Geneva’s next coveted project is the launch of the STYLE FOR BREAKFAST SERIES, a private morning fête where fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands connect with social influencers.

#PYNKGirls are much more than fabulous clothes and shoes. We crave food for our minds and souls just as much as we crave the latest Alexander Wang bag. The 10 books listed below (in no particular order) are #PYNKapproved and absolute must-haves for every #PYNKGirls’ iBooks shelf!

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and above all, following our dreams.

“This novel is inspiration in black and white. Will Smith says this book changed his life and if you read it, it will change yours too!” –Tiffany James, Reader

A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson

In ‘A Return to Love’, Marianne Williamson takes us on a spiritual journey to help us recover love lost. Instead of being about romance, as one might suspect, this book is a reflection on ‘A Course in Miracles’ and serves to guide us back to thinking and decision-making patterns routed in love instead of fear.

“This book is extremely enlightening and insightful. In the book, Marianne talks about how we are conditioned to fear due to experiences and people in our lives. She also states that fear isn’t real and talks about how to minimize and move past it.” -Lisa Cole, Reader

It’s Complicated (But It Doesn’t Have To Be) by Paul C. Brunson

The ‘Real Life Hitch’ presents a refreshingly optimistic and plainspoken dating guide to finding romance—both on- and off-line.
With an appealing mix of humor, candor, and real-world examples, It’s Complicated (But It Doesn’t Have to Be) is a breath of fresh air in the dating guide category, offering a message of eternal optimism from a man who believes in true love—and practices what he preaches.

“This book is great because it gives great love and relationship tips with a modern twist. Dating has changed a lot due to technology and as such, PYNK girls need tips that actually make sense in today’s world. This is the perfect book for modern relationships.” –Sharon Johnson, Reader

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell

If you have never read ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’, you’ve been missing out on one of the most influential leadership books of all time.
“A book is a conversation between the author and reader,” says Maxwell. “It’s been ten years since I wrote The 21 Laws of Leadership. I’ve grown a lot since then. I’ve taught these laws in dozens of countries around the world. This new edition gives me the opportunity to share what I’ve learned.”

In ‘Peace from Broken Pieces’, best-selling author Iyanla Vanzant recounts the last decade of her life and the spiritual lessons learned-from the price of success during her meteoric rise as a TV celebrity on Oprah, the Iyanla TV show, to the dissolution of her marriage and her daughter’s 15 months of illness and death on Christmas day. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Iyanla shares why everything we need to learn is reflected in our relationships and the strength and wisdom she has gained by supporting others in their journeys to make sense out of the puzzle pieces of their lives.

“In my opinion, anything Iyanla Vanzant writes should be considered chicken bisque for the PYNK girls’ fabulous soul. She has an amazing way of tapping into your soul and clearing out any negative energy and uses her own trials and triumphs to do so.”-Candice Jones, Music & Culture Editor

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

One of the most important works of twentieth-century American literature, Zora Neale Hurston’s beloved 1937 classic, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. A true literary wonder, Hurston’s masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published — perhaps the most widely read and highly regarded novel in the entire canon of African American literature.

“This is the single most amazing love story I have ever read and by far my favorite novel of all time. It is a dynamic novel that not only is an epic love story but also a story of self-discovery. One that any woman can pull inspiration from.” –Candice Jones, Music & Culture Editor

by Rachel Huggins

Relationship coach, entrepreneur and author Tionna Smalls is a certified boss chick. She wrote about love and relationships before Steve Harvey, she’s that friend that always keeps it real, and she goes hard for her dreams.

We were first introduced to Smalls on VH1′s What Chilli Wants, as the feisty Brooklyn native pulled no punches in TLC member Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas’ search for love.

“First you gotta get over Usher to get you a man,” she told Chilli bluntly when they first met. “Nobody wants nobody with baggage, even if it is Louis Vuitton.”

Since the show ended in 2011, Smalls has leveraged her popularity with a budding publishing company, Talk Dat Ish Entertainment, a boutique named Loveys and a new reality show named after her popular book “Girl, Get Your Mind Right” that premieres tonight at 6p ET on MTV.

“It took me three years to get another show but it’s all together and it’s all about Tionna Smalls, the brand. It’s like ‘What Chilli Wants’ but to help young girls with their self esteem, helping them date and helping them get their mind right.”

After re-evaluating past mistakes in her love life, the author of “Girl, Get Your Mind Right,” and “Men Love Abuse,” began writing books to guide others. “Sometimes my love life is funny,” Smalls admits, “I’ve been engaged twice.” In 2007, she e-mailed the editors of Gawker.com, a popular New York City-based blog, a letter written in third person to promote her first self-published book. Her approach garnered so much attention that she was later hired as the site’s relationship columnist. “Ask Tionna” received more than 20,000 unique views daily while on Gawker.com.

“I knew they would find it hilarious that I was writing from a TionnaTSmalls e-mail. If you don’t market yourself, ain’t nobody gonna market you the correct way,” she chimes in, recalling one of the game-changing moments of her career. “I don’t believe in doing things traditionally. I don’t try to be like nobody, I just try to be like myself.”

At 28-years old, Smalls is building her empire—her own way. “It’s more work,” she says, “but I can do what I want to do.” Keyshia Cole’s siser, Neffeteria “Neffe” Pugh (formerly of BET’s “The Way It Is” and “Frankie & Neffe”) is one of the many authors signed to Talk Dat Ish Books, a division of Smalls’ publishing company. In her new book, “The Price I Paid,” Pugh details life after reality TV stardom.

Smalls says a lot of publishers wouldn’t have taken on the project. “But I did it because I wanted to show other black women that we can help each other. Let’s get money and make moves together.”

There’s no question where she gets her grit and grind from: Brooklyn.

Raised in East New York, Smalls wanted to be a writer—and a boss—at an early age. Her happily married parents owned property throughout Brooklyn and she enjoyed looking at office buildings, envisioning herself in charge one day. “Every little girl wanted to be a teacher, a lawyer; I wanted to be a boss. I didn’t even know what kind,” she says in her signature tell-it-like-it-is tone. Curious about the opposite sex, in third grade she began writing fiction stories. “The stuff I used to write about was so grown,” she laughs. “I was like oh my god! I was writing about sex, chillin’ and everything. I’m not lying.” But, life was rough…emotionally.

“My father didn’t play that girl shit, that crying shit,” she reveals. “He taught us to get over shit quick. If I cry I feel weak because my father taught us that when we were young. I’m glad I was raised like that because it made me tough. I look at girls now and they let any dude make them cry, they love every dude that comes in their life.”

Until this day her motto is the same: Crying gets you nowhere, it just clouds your judgment. And she credits New York for strengthening her work ethic. In six days she wrote “Brooklyn Bred,” the first feature film under Talk Dat Ish Entertainment, about a young man’s struggle in the borough. “It brings you back to the nineties when we had good movies like “Juice,” she gushes. “I’m from the ‘hood-hood.’ That shit’s in the paper every day. In Brooklyn all we tryna do is survive.”

After working nonstop on the 127-page script, Smalls is now in the process of selling the film. She also plans to go back to school to become a therapist. When her creative juices are flowing, she can do anything. “If you follow your passion, you’ll never work another day in your life,” she advices. And every day she is living her dreams.
